Exploring a treatment option for hepatic EHE: subsegmental bland embolization

A recent study published in Cancer Control describes a treatment approach for hepatic (liver) EHE called subsegmental bland embolization, which blocks blood flow to individual tumors. In three patients with multiple liver tumors, most treated tumors shrank significantly, and the disease was initially controlled in all patients. The procedure was well tolerated, with no serious complications reported.

This approach may offer an option for people with hepatic EHE who are not candidates for surgery or transplant, and it can be repeated if new tumors develop. While the study was small, the results are encouraging.

Why this matters:

This report adds to the growing set of treatment strategies being explored for EHE, especially for those with limited options. The authors emphasize the need for prospective studies, shared data registries, and collaborative research efforts to better define who benefits most from this treatment and how it should be combined with systemic therapies to improve outcomes for people living with EHE.
