What started as a GoFundMe page to help Steve Walsh with EHE-related medical expenses turned into a memorial as he lost his 10-month battle with EHE on September 22, 2023. From the Southside of Chicago, Steve is remembered for his love of life, sports, and the people closest to him.
His sister, Jessica shared, “On September 22, we lost my brother to EHE ten months post-diagnosis. He was 35 years old. He was a light in this world and will be greatly missed by so many. Fifteen days after he passed, we decided to still hold a benefit in his name that was supposed to go towards paying for his medical treatments, but will now go towards The EHE Foundation – per his request. We lost Steve, but EHE has gained an army of people ready to fight this terrible disease in honor of the best guy I’ve ever known.”
As they say, the show must go on, and Shakedown for Steve was held on October 7, 2023, at 115 Bourbon Street, a staple of Chicago’s Southside. Family and friends joined together to celebrate Steve’s life raising over $20,000 to benefit The EHE Foundation.
Maggie Cameron, Director of Development & Communications, commented. “It is with profound gratitude that The EHE Foundation accepts this generous gift. We are deeply touched by the spirit of perseverance and generosity shown by Steve’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
When thanking their supporters, event organizers remarked, “Our hearts are shattered and yet so full at the same time.” In the true spirit of the man they honor, Steve’s family and friends are busy planning their next fundraising event, the 2nd Annual Big Steve Day – June 29, 2024, at Stoney Creek Golf Course in Oak Lawn, Illinois.
The EHE Foundation is grateful to have the chance to learn more about Steve, and we are greatly appreciative of the donation from Shakedown for Steve to advance our mission to find treatments and a cure for EHE. We look forward to supporting Steve’s family and friends as they plan their next event.
